Zakat on Agriculture

It is imposed on any staple food of a state that has reached its nisab and haul. Zakatable crops are the grains and cereals categorized as major foodstuff, filling and preservable like rice, date, corn, wheat and others.

Evidence of zakat on agriculture

 

God says:

“O believers! Spend (in the way of Allah) of the good things you have earned, and of that which We have produced for you from the earth...” (Al-Baqarah: 267)

 

Conditions for zakat on agricultural product

  1. Islam
  2. Full ownership
  3. Free
  4. Nisab reached - * measured by 5 wasq equivalent to 363 ‘gantang’ (Malaysia)
  5. Grains and fruits to be cultivated by human

*If non-basic crops such as coconut, oil palm, rubber, black pepper, sugar cane, cocoa and other fruits are traded, zakat on business is obligatory.

Methods of zakat on agricultural product

 

Zakat on grains and fruits that have reached nisab is paid according to the percentage of production. The rates are depends on the way it is cultivated.

Zakat rate for grains and fruits that reach its nisab and has been cultivated using human workforce or others like animal and machinery or with a considerable amount of expenditure is 5% or 1/20.

Zakat rate for grains and fruits that reach its nisab and rely only on the falls of rain or live by the river streams is 10% or 1/10.

Zakat for crops that use both of the above production method is 7.5%.
